REVIEWS

Een paar dagen later zat Serries met de Portugese cellist Rodrigues in de studio voor de opnames van ‘The Sage Flower’. Een prachtige en op sommige momenten bijzonder heftige set. Neem bijvoorbeeld het onstuimige ‘Punctuation Marks’, waarin we Serries en Rodrigues krachtige klanksalvo’s horen afvuren, waarbij we de indruk krijgen meer te horen dan een archtop gitaar en een cello, iets dat geenszins het geval is. Op andere momenten schurken we aan tegen de stilte, klinken als in ‘Bloom’ louter wat losse aanslagen die alle tijd krijgen om in de ruimte op te lossen. Over het algemeen spelen ritme en melodie in dit soort muziek een vrij kleine rol, in ‘Dandellion’ en ‘Stochastic Regions’ heb ik deze dan ook niet gehoord, maar het begin van ‘The Woody Stems’ vormt één van de uitzonderingen, zowel ritme als melodie klinken hier, al is het wel van korte duur, in het verdere verloop zoeken de twee weer de abstractie en is structuur ver te zoeken. Ook in het vrij korte ‘A Palm’ klikt een structuur die we voorzichtig als melodie kunnen definiëren. In ‘Landing II’ rijzen de klanken op boeiende wijze op uit de stilte, we horen duidelijk Serries, in de weer met zijn e-bow, terwijl Rodrigues op de achtergrond een mooi patroon op zijn cello ten gehore brengt.
